History
Sheffield Racial Equality Council (SREC)
had a record of over 42 years of promoting racial equality.
It was founded in 1967 as the
Sheffield Committee for Community Relations, before the 1968 Race Relations Act.
After the 1976 Race Relations Act was passed the Commission
for Racial Equality was established. Community Relations Councils along with the Local Authority and minority ethnic organisations
were identified as key local organisations for promoting racial equality.
In 1990, the organisation became Sheffield Racial Equality Council (SREC). The organisation began taking
on legal cases with the help of a full-time caseworker for indivduals in the Sheffield community. The service has
since awarded tens of thousands of pounds for victims of racial discrimination and harassment .
In 2010 SREC closed
due to City Council withdrawing funding despite a doubling of racial discrimination enquiries coming to SREC in the last
year alone.
