History
Sheffield Racial Equality Council (SREC)
had a record of over 42 years of promoting racial equality. It was founded in 1967 as the Sheffield Committee
for Community Relations, before the 1968 Race Relations Act.
It arose through different black & minority ethnic communities
coming together in response to the...
‘No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish Need Apply’
signs that were then displayed in Sheffield and other parts of the country at the
time.
After the 1976 Race Relations Act was passed the Commission
for Racial Equality was established. Community Relations Councils along with the Local Authority and minority ethnic organisations
were identified as key local organisations for promoting racial equality.
In 1990, the organisation became Sheffield Racial Equality Council (SREC).
In 2010 SREC
closed due to City Council withdrawing funding.
