History

Sheffield Racial Equality Council (SREC) had a record of over 42 years of promoting racial equality.

It was founded in 1967 as the Sheffield Committee for Community Relations, before the 1968 Race Relations Act.

It arose through different black & minority ethnic communities coming together in response to the...

‘No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish Need Apply’

signs that were then displayed in Sheffield and other parts of the country at the time.

After the 1976 Race Relations Act was passed the Commission for Racial Equality was established. Community Relations Councils along with the Local Authority and minority ethnic organisations were identified as key local organisations for promoting racial equality.

In 1990, the organisation became Sheffield Racial Equality Council (SREC).

In 2010 SREC closed due to City Council withdrawing funding.

The purpose of Sheffield Racial Equality Council was to:-

  • Work for a just society in which there is racial equality and community harmony which gives all citizens an equal chance to learn, work and live free from racial discrimination, harassment and victimization.
  • Promote recognition that equality is a fundamental right and thus SREC is committed to work towards that right from a specific skills base and expertise for race equality.
